    Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area

    The Sam's Point Preserve, located on the highest section of the Shawangunk Mountains, is the most southerly section of Minnewaska State Park Preserve. The area comprises approximately 5,000 acres, and contains a globally rare community of high altitude pitch pine barrens. The pitch pine barrens, and the matrix of chestnut oak forest that surrounds them, provide habitat for abundant flora and fauna, both rare and common. Sam's Point contains a bounty of natural splendor. It is home to Lake Maratanza, one of the five Shawangunk sky lakes; ice cave crevices that you can explore; cliffs and numerous scenic vistas. Verkeerder Kill Falls, is a spectacular 187 foot high waterfall located on private property, please respect the use of private property and remain on the trail.

    Ellenville Flight Park

    Ellenville Flight Park is the country’s most complete, privately owned Hang Gliding and Paragliding operation. This spectacular site, situated along the beautiful Shawangunk Mountain range, is about 75 miles north of New York City. It has a take off altitude of 1,350 feet and a 30 acre landing field where our shop is located. As “The Hang Gliding Capital of the East,” Ellenville Flight Park has a topography which produces ridge, thermal, and wave lift conditions for flying at its best. It has been the host of National Championships in the past, and boasts a distance record of 201 miles, an altitude gain record of 10,500 feet, and a duration flight of over 11 hours!

    From New York State Thruway: Take EXIT 16(Harriman) off of the Thruway. Pay toll and continue straight on Route 17 West. Continue on Route 17 West, drive for approximately 1/2 hour and take EXIT 113 off of Route 17(wursboro). Go to end of ramp and take a right turn onto Rt209. You will stay on this road for approximately 11 miles. Rt 209 becomes Main St. in Ellenville. After the first traffic light, look for a giant MOTEL sign in blue letters on the right hand side. This is our motel.

    From Palisades Parkway:Go over George Washington bridge, take Palisades PKwy exit at the end of bridge, Drive for approximately 35 mimutes. Take EXIT 16(bear left) at the end of the exit you will come upon a traffic circle. Take the exit at the opposite end (Central Valley-Route 6). Route 6 will become Route 17 after 7 miles or so.Continue on Route 17 West, drive for approximately 1/2 hour and take EXIT 113 off of Route 17(wursboro).
